Findings from Research on Problem Solving, Creativity & TRIZ

  • “Self-efficacy” is an individual’s belief in his or her innate ability to achieve goals.  TRIZ practitioners report that they became very confident in their ability to solve almost any problem.  In addition, it motivated them to want to learn more of the technical foundations of the problem to make themselves even more confident in their success.
  • There is a significant correlation between self-efficacy and academic success in high school and college.
  • There is a significant correlation between problem-solving training and self-efficacy.
  • Increased engineering self-efficacy beliefs are predictive of improved learning and understanding in introductory engineering courses
  • Teaching a separate TRIZ training course was found to enhance students’ problem solving self-efficacy significantly more than the four years of an engineering degree.
  • It has been well established that problem solving skills need to be taught explicitly, vs. only embedded in standard curriculum.  School administration believe the curriculum is already too heavy to add another class.
  • Commonly-used problem-solving approaches/training are far less likely to produce deep understanding of causes and developing elegant solutions than with PBCA and TRIZ.
